The early 1970s marked the peak of the American muscle car era. It was a time when raw power, bold designs and automotive bravado defined the roads, and the 1970 Pontiac GTO Ram Air IV was definitely among the legends of this golden period.
Finished in Starlight Black with a beautiful brown interior, The “Main Street” GTO instantly conjures imagery of cruising through town on a Friday night with your high school buddies in the first "hot rod" that you and your old man put together in the garage. Buying new parts when you could afford them and fixing whatever parts may have broken the previous weekend. What a great time it was!

The Motown Missile itself is a testament to Chrysler’s ambition. Built as a factory test bed by some of the best engineers, including the famous Tom Hoover, it was used to trial new concepts before passing them down to legendary racers like Sox & Martin. The car’s original purpose was clear, break new ground, and push what was technically possible.
One aspect of the Motown Missile that separated it from all other Pro Stock cars at the time was the connection it had with the Chrysler NASA Rocket Development Division (located in Huntsville, AL) that incorporated all kinds of aerospace technology, in the way of exotic testing equipment and DAQ (data acquisition) for when the car was traveling down the race track.
While it was a full-on racecar, it actually doubled as a test and development vehicle. In 1971 driver Don Carlton joined the team and drove the Motown Missile in the '71 Grand nationals and set an all-time low et at 9.48 and 146.10 mph.

Dick Smothers, of the Tom and Dick Smothers comedy team, was the driving force behind their hit television series and their racing ventures. Willard Wright was credited with helping put Dick behind the wheel of an Oldsmobile in 1968, prior to the brothers going on to compete with this 350-powered SS/F Cutlass. Hurst’s Shifty Doctor, Jack Watson, helped prepare the Smothers’ car. With a cameraman and equipment on board, Dick netted a 12.99 on his third pass in the car.
George Berejik received a call from the Smothers brothers’ lawyer prior to the 1971 NHRA Nationals, telling him that he had been dropped by the Smothers and that the Smothers name and logo had to come off the car. The Berejik team went to Indy and paid $600 to have the name and logo removed. They finally got to the gates, where the Smothers were waiting and told them that the lawyer was misinformed and to get the lettering back on the car. Berejik then spent $700 to have the name repainted! The Smothers deal lasted until the end of the 1971 season, when Oldsmobile pulled the plug. Loyed “Woody” Woodland, seen here running F/SA at Maple Grove, banged off 11.60s on a 12.20 F/S record. . Note: Your Credit Card will not be charged until the item is ready to ship! . The 1970 Oldsmobile 442 is a second generation model that raised the bar in the muscle car horsepower race of the day. Manufacturers were all scrambling to climb to the top of the horsepower mountain. The W30 package was Oldsmobile's ultimate high-performance offering and a formidable machine for its day.
From 1969-1972, Oldsmobile used a mad scientist named Dr. Oldsmobile to promote it's high performance W Machine muscle cars. This Drag Outlaw 442 W30 is a throwback to those wild and crazy Dr. Olds days.
The campaign is remembered for its "monster movie" aesthetic and helped establish Oldsmobile's performance image during the muscle car era!

Going into the 1970s, U.S. automakers were faced with a dilemma: how to keep muscle car demand up in the wake of skyrocketing insurance premiums. One was to develop small-displacement cars like the Duster 340 and the Heavy Chevy. The other was to offer bigger engines in a mid-size body style whose VIN didn’t give anything away to your insurance agent.
This legend was born when George Hurst fell in love with the all-new Cutlass Supreme body style for 1970. He tasked John Beltz and Jim Wangers to build him an Olds super car in Black & Gold. It was equipped with the 455 power plant and Hurts's signature dual-gate shifter. Sadly, Oldsmobile declined the opportunity to work with Hurst to produce this car, so the black and gold 1970 Hurst/Olds remains a unique one of one.
