Dick Harrell was a drag racing legend in the 1960s and 1970s with a loyalty so strong to the Bow Tie, it earned him the nickname “Mr. Chevrolet.” He was one of the few racers who both drove and wrenched on their cars. His expertise in developing his cars and parts, as well as his willingness to share his knowledge, led him to work with Nickey Chevrolet, Yenko Chevrolet, and eventually build his own COPO Camaros.
But what does COPO really mean? An acronym for “Central Office Production Order,” COPO was the method used by dealers in the know who could use it to order options. Such as a factory installed 427 in a 1969 Camaro.

The 1970s were prime time for drag racing, and during that time period Mopar reined supreme. That is, until Ray Allen entered the scene. He decided to bring Chevrolet to frontline with all-powerful LS6 build, and in the process he created an icon.
Easily one of the most well known vehicles to vintage racing fans, this 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle was piloted by Allen, and the already established Ralph Truppi and Tommy Kling. The trio sprinted their way to an unbeaten season in 1970, setting a national record at that time of 11.33 seconds, clocking in a half second faster than the Mopars across the field.

In the hierarchy of the street, circa 1970, there were the Big Dogs and then there was everyone else. Having 400 cubic inches under the hood didn’t cut it anymore at the Stoplight Grand Prix. The name of the game was horsepower and the more grunt the better, and more grunt meant more cubic inches and more horsepower. The old standard “there’s no replacement for displacement” was never truer in 1970, and sitting atop the muscle car food chain was Chevrolet’s SS Chevelle. Not just the garden variety, 360 horsepower SS454, but the King Kong of the Bow Tie brigade, designated RPO Z15. Checking off this option delivered a 450 horsepower, 454 cubic inch solid lifter behemoth that cranked out 500 lbs.-ft. of torque and bludgeoned any challengers for its title King of the Streets.
