In the winter of 1970, a Mr. Wayne Hagen caught wind of some rattling news: the Judge was retiring. In this case, no political figure was stepping down but rather Pontiac’s sportster of the same name. “He wanted one his whole life but couldn’t swing it financially,’ recalls his wife, Mary. “Realizing this would be his last chance to get one, he figured he should get moving.” . In April of 1971, the lovebirds swung by Hansord Pontiac, in Minneapolis, only to be greeted with a terrible announcement: they were too late. “The sales staff said sadly we had missed the boat in getting in an order,’ recalls Mary. Officially, the Judge was discontinued in February and here it was nearly a month later. “We told them we weren’t interested anymore and started to leave,’ said Mary. “Before we could get to the door, they said they would call up Pontiac and ask if they’ll make one more.” . Further pressing their luck, the Hagens had a special request: the car needed to be painted in their favorite color, Orbit Orange. “We had to have one in that color, we just loved it,’ gushed Mary. Easier said than done, that vibrant hue was no longer available for the 1971 model year. Still, eager for a sale, the dealership put in a special paint request to make it happen. . Unearthed for the first time in years, the Judge sees daylight. As of now, the vehicle shows to be the last GTO Judge produced in 1971. .

Phil Bonner had a relatively short career in the world of top level drag racing but his impact is still felt today and fans of the blue oval brand still herald Bonner as one of the best that ever strapped himself into a full bodied car. His career began like many did down south in the 1950s by hitting strips in the car he drove around every day. Beating on that old Ford with its automatic transmission on strips paved with dirt and clay helped set the stage for a meteoric rise through the straight line ranks that began in the early 1960s and ended at the close of the decade with a chosen retirement. There was certainly a lot of stuff that happened in the middle, though. Bonner was front and center through the rapid and often scary evolution of the funny car from the era of over powered and under chassied door slammers to the “advanced” tube chassis, flip top cars that were part of the program during the late 1960s. He ran Ford cars from the beginning right up until he chose to retire from the sport in 1969 when he saw the writing on the wall for Ford’s factory supported drag program and went back to the world of selling cars. .
