Beauty and beast are a fitting description for this 1969 Mach 1 that packs an R-code 428 Cobra Jet into a beautiful Aztec Aqua fastback body with black and gold stripes. One of only 34 finished in the Code E pastel shade, the Mach 1’s production tally narrows down to a one-of-one with its option and equipment combination.
At the height of the muscle car era, Ford introduced the Mach 1 as a new model for the Mustang lineup and equipped the exterior with a blackout hood with locking pins, reflective side and rear panel stripes, a pop-open gas cap and quad exhaust tips. More than just muscular looks, the Mach 1 package also added a special interior with high-back Comfort weave bucket seats, molded door panels, a rim-blow steering wheel, a console and wood-grain trim.

"Ohio" George Montgomery was one of the first superstars in NHRA Drag Racing history. Montgomery won the prestigious U.S. Nationals four times (1959, 1960, 1963, and 1969) and set numerous speed and e.t. records in several cars during his illustrious driving career. He was a pioneer, innovator, and mechanical genius who often fabricated his own parts, starting as far back as the 1950s.
In 1966, "Ohio George" Montgomery joined the Ford Racing team and helped develop and test the new 427ci SOHC Hemi engine. In 1967, Ford convinced him to switch to a Mustang body that could be found in their dealerships—as the saying goes, "Win on Sunday, sell on Monday." Montgomery agreed, and parked the 1933 Willys in favor of the more aerodynamic 1967 Mustang body, which had a 6-71-blown 427ci SOHC Ford engine between the framerails. The 'Stang set five NHRA national records and won Super Eliminator at the 1969 Spring Nationals in Dallas.
Two years later, Montgomery debuted the Mr. Gasket Gasser at the 1969 U.S. Nationals. This was a one-off 1969 Mustang Mach 1 handcrafted fiberglass body from the Ford Drag Racing program and was powered by a twin-turbocharged Boss 429 engine. The car set numerous speed and e.t. records and won Super Eliminator at the 1969 U.S. Nationals, as well as victories at the 1973 and 1974 Gatornationals in Gainesville, Florida.

Dick Smothers, of the Tom and Dick Smothers comedy team, was the driving force behind their hit television series and their racing ventures. Willard Wright was credited with helping put Dick behind the wheel of an Oldsmobile in 1968, prior to the brothers going on to compete with this 350-powered SS/F Cutlass. Hurst’s Shifty Doctor, Jack Watson, helped prepare the Smothers’ car. With a cameraman and equipment on board, Dick netted a 12.99 on his third pass in the car.
George Berejik received a call from the Smothers brothers’ lawyer prior to the 1971 NHRA Nationals, telling him that he had been dropped by the Smothers and that the Smothers name and logo had to come off the car. The Berejik team went to Indy and paid $600 to have the name and logo removed. They finally got to the gates, where the Smothers were waiting and told them that the lawyer was misinformed and to get the lettering back on the car. Berejik then spent $700 to have the name repainted! The Smothers deal lasted until the end of the 1971 season, when Oldsmobile pulled the plug. Loyed “Woody” Woodland, seen here running F/SA at Maple Grove, banged off 11.60s on a 12.20 F/S record. . In the grand muscle car era, Oldsmobile offered the beefed up the 442 to offer to a performance hungry population. But Olds did not stop there as they rolled out an even more exciting performance packaged called the W30. Thanks to a special-order color that many muscle car enthusiasts would describe as sacrilegious, a 1970 442 was finished in Plum Crazy! . Olds allowed dealers to commission special-order paint for $50 (about $400 as of 2023). A dealer in Virginia Beach took advantage of this option as he wished to have a custom piece in his showroom and placed the order for the Plum Crazy color scheme. This extremely rare Oldsmobile packs all the factory W30 goodies with white stripes and a white convertible top.

Going into the 1970s, U.S. automakers were faced with a dilemma: how to keep muscle car demand up in the wake of skyrocketing insurance premiums. One was to develop small-displacement cars like the Duster 340 and the Heavy Chevy. The other was to offer bigger engines in a mid-size body style whose VIN didn’t give anything away to your insurance agent.
This legend was born when George Hurst fell in love with the all-new Cutlass Supreme body style for 1970. He tasked John Beltz and Jim Wangers to build him an Olds super car in Black & Gold. It was equipped with the 455 power plant and Hurts's signature dual-gate shifter. Sadly, Oldsmobile declined the opportunity to work with Hurst to produce this car, so the black and gold 1970 Hurst/Olds remains a unique one of one.

Phil Bonner had a relatively short career in the world of top level drag racing but his impact is still felt today and fans of the blue oval brand still herald Bonner as one of the best that ever strapped himself into a full bodied car. His career began like many did down south in the 1950s by hitting strips in the car he drove around every day. Beating on that old Ford with its automatic transmission on strips paved with dirt and clay helped set the stage for a meteoric rise through the straight line ranks that began in the early 1960s and ended at the close of the decade with a chosen retirement. There was certainly a lot of stuff that happened in the middle, though.
Bonner was front and center through the rapid and often scary evolution of the funny car from the era of over powered and under chassied door slammers to the “advanced” tube chassis, flip top cars that were part of the program during the late 1960s. He ran Ford cars from the beginning right up until he chose to retire from the sport in 1969 when he saw the writing on the wall for Ford’s factory supported drag program and went back to the world of selling cars.

Don Grotheer may not be a household name, but he was a Super Stock NHRA/AHRA heavy hitter during the 1960s. Grotheer started racing a black ’63 Plymouth followed by a white ’63 Plymouth AA/Stock eliminator in 1965. He was able to win the AA/S championship, which caught the attention of Bob Cahill, product planner, and manager of Chrysler’s drag racing program. Cahill provided Grotheer a parts contract. Grotheer was also enlisted to conduct performance clinics at Chrysler dealerships (along with Sox & Martin and Dick Landy) and he did over 75 of them.
He was also a pioneer of the Pro Stock class in its infancy. In 1967, Grotheer raced a '67 Plymouth Belvedere and won the Winternationals class eliminations, securing another Division Championship. Grotheer went on and won again in 1967 then again at the ’69 Winternationals in his Super Stock/B Automatic Cuda with B&M “secret weapons” transmission parts and “race-stall tork-converter.” Always an innovator, he continued to race for many more years.

1971 was the last year so many engine options would be offered in the Barracuda, as new government regulations the following year would require horsepower to be expressed as net instead of gross, and the largest engine available for the Barracuda was a 340 CID V8. In 1971, however, Barracuda buyers could choose from just about every engine Plymouth produced, just as they had been able to the year before.
Since the Coupe was just a stripped down hardtop model, their production numbers are grouped together. While these were the best selling models of the 1971 Barracudas, their production was only at 9,459. The Coupe had a base price of $2,654, while the Hardtop started at $2,766. The convertible began at $3,023 and had a production run of 1,014.
