Cuda Drag Car “Arlen Vanke” – 1968

"Akron" Arlen Vanke was a working-man's drag racer. Competing--and winning--in the Stock, Super Stock and Pro Stock classes, he set records with Pontiacs and, later, Plymouths, earning multiple Stock Eliminator titles with both marques. Through it all, he built the cars in a backyard garage and often drove his open ramp truck to the track and back. In fact, Chrysler hired Vanke to test their performance technology. In 1967, Arlen modified the RO23 Hemi intake manifold for racing. "NHRA rules allowed racers to modify the intake manifold, so I made the stock manifold into a plenum chamber manifold, " he said. . Vanke's Hemi, along with the Sox & Martin team, gave Mopars so many victories in the late '60s that they dominated the scene in Super Stocks. In 1968, he built this incredible HEMI Cuda that we are so proud to offer. He won the Nationals in August at Indy running SS/B with his 1968 Plymouth Hemi Cuda. He then reset the record again with a 10.61 at 140 miles per hour in the Cuda in SS/A at the Winter Nationals in Pomona, California. . . Special Offer!! Dick Landy's "Boycott" 1970 Dodge HEMI Challenger is unique in so many ways that every passionate Mopar enthusiast will be thrilled by its story. It became famous with the name the "Boycott Car" after Dick Landy won the AHRA Championship in 1973 and was handicapped by the new rules as the rest of the Mopar Pro Stock race drivers. However, Dick Landy not only won the Gator Nationals in 1974, but also set a new SS/D record at Sports Nationals. Dick Landy became one of only four drivers to win an NHRA crown between the 1970-1971 season! Built as a factory test bed by some of the best engineers, including the famous Tom Hoover, it was used to trial new concepts before passing them down to legendary racers like Sox & Martin. The car’s original purpose was clear, break new ground, and push what was technically possible. One aspect of the Motown Missile that separated it from all other Pro Stock cars at the time was the connection it had with the Chrysler NASA Rocket Development Division (located in Huntsville, AL) that incorporated all kinds of aerospace technology, in the way of exotic testing equipment and DAQ (data acquisition) for when the car was traveling down the race track. While it was a full-on racecar, it actually doubled as a test and development vehicle. In 1971 driver Don Carlton joined the team and drove the Motown Missile in the '71 Grand nationals and set an all-time low et at 9.48 and 146.10 mph. This is the Ramp Truck used to haul the car! . . Don Grotheer may not be a household name, but he was a Super Stock NHRA/AHRA heavy hitter during the 1960s.  Grotheer started racing a black ’63 Plymouth followed by a white ’63 Plymouth AA/Stock eliminator in 1965. He was able to win the AA/S championship, which caught the attention of Bob Cahill, product planner, and manager of Chrysler’s drag racing program. Cahill provided Grotheer a parts contract. Grotheer was also enlisted to conduct performance clinics at Chrysler dealerships (along with Sox & Martin and Dick Landy) and he did over 75 of them. He was also a pioneer of the Pro Stock class in its infancy. In 1967, Grotheer raced a '67 Plymouth Belvedere and won the Winternationals class eliminations, securing another Division Championship. Grotheer went on and won again in 1967 then again at the ’69 Winternationals in his Super Stock/B Automatic Cuda with B&M “secret weapons” transmission parts and “race-stall tork-converter.” Always an innovator, he continued to race for many more years.  .
