Phil Bonner had a relatively short career in the world of top level drag racing but his impact is still felt today and fans of the blue oval brand still herald Bonner as one of the best that ever strapped himself into a full bodied car. His career began like many did down south in the 1950s by hitting strips in the car he drove around every day. Beating on that old Ford with its automatic transmission on strips paved with dirt and clay helped set the stage for a meteoric rise through the straight line ranks that began in the early 1960s and ended at the close of the decade with a chosen retirement. There was certainly a lot of stuff that happened in the middle, though.
Bonner was front and center through the rapid and often scary evolution of the funny car from the era of over powered and under chassied door slammers to the “advanced” tube chassis, flip top cars that were part of the program during the late 1960s. He ran Ford cars from the beginning right up until he chose to retire from the sport in 1969 when he saw the writing on the wall for Ford’s factory supported drag program and went back to the world of selling cars.

Anyone witnessing the strip-shaking performances of today's 275-mph 5-second AA/Funny Cars will find it difficult to connect those thundering acceleration machines with the purely pedestrian daily drivers found in a typical new-car dealer's showroom. But by winding back the timers to the mid-'60s, the relationship between these contemporary competition cars and yesterday's store-bought "grocery getters" can be seen more clearly.
Chrysler's corporate drag racing efforts went extreme in 1965 with a handful of purpose-built drag machines born of the muscle car era's "win at all costs" mentality. The 1965 Plymouth Factory Altered Wheelbase cars and their Dodge counterparts resulted from a cutthroat battle between Ford and Chrysler for victory in the NHRA's Super Stock and A/Factory Experimental A/FX classes.

1971 was the last year so many engine options would be offered in the Barracuda, as new government regulations the following year would require horsepower to be expressed as net instead of gross, and the largest engine available for the Barracuda was a 340 CID V8. In 1971, however, Barracuda buyers could choose from just about every engine Plymouth produced, just as they had been able to the year before.
Since the Coupe was just a stripped down hardtop model, their production numbers are grouped together. While these were the best selling models of the 1971 Barracudas, their production was only at 9,459. The Coupe had a base price of $2,654, while the Hardtop started at $2,766. The convertible began at $3,023 and had a production run of 1,014.

Another very historically significant Pontiac, this is one of the last 1971 GTO Judges produced of the 357 cars built. Pontiac introduced the 455 HO rated at 335 HP at 4,800 RPM and 480 lb-ft of torque at 3,600 RPM on the strength of the improved breathing inherent in its Ram Air IV round-port heads, 4-barrel carburetor and dual exhaust. The GTO and its Judge variant were more attractive machines if one’s tastes leaned toward the more daring, the Judge adding bold graphic excitement to the GTO’s restyled nose treatment and flared fender brows.
Quezel Gold metallic paint and contrasting Judge emblems and graphics adorn this GTO, which is one of the last Judges known to have been built in the model’s history. . Note: Your Credit Card will not be charged until the item is ready to ship! .Shelby GT 350 – 1965

Because the cars from Shelby American have always been desirable rides, their biographies are as varied as their original owners. Shelby Mustangs and two-seat Cobras corralled buyers from all walks of life, from the blue-collar middle class to the affluent. However, Dave Steine's '65 Shelby GT350 isn't your typical rural Wisconsin Slippery's Tavern big fish story. Shelby American scheduled this GT350 for delivery via air freight to Romy Hammes Ford in South Bend, Indiana. Based on what we know about Trans World Airlines in 1965, Dave's GT350 was loaded onto a Boeing 707-331F freighter at the Los Angeles International Airport and jetted across the continent. That's quite a distinction when you consider how many Mustangs were shipped via rail and truck. After this GT350 was delivered to the dealership, the buyer backed out of the deal. The TWA pilot who flew the car from Los Angeles to Indiana got word of this turn of events and decided to buy the car from Hi-Performance Motors, Shelby's own dealership in Southern California. So the car was air freighted back to Los Angeles for delivery to the pilot.
Where most Shelby Mustangs were thrashed and trashed on road courses and isolated stretches of highway, this one enjoyed 20 years of meticulous care until it was sold to Jim Bridges in--ironically--Shelby, North Carolina. It was there this car sat in a climate-controlled environment for another 22 years. Dave Steine eventually bought the GT350 from another highly respected Ford collector, Jacky Jones.

In 1968 six special paint colors appeared on Shelbys. They were known by their special "WT" identification code number. The total production number of these special “WT” paint cars was just 159 across all six paint variations. These cars were sold as part of Ford's "Summer Sales Promotion". The “WT” cars were offered on both the GT500KR and GT350 models and were only available with black or saddle interiors. The rarity of these cars is increased because they could not be ordered from Shelby. To get your hands on one of these cars, your Shelby dealer had to track down the “WT” car you were after throughout the Shelby dealer network.
This final release is painted with Code 5107 Orange with a black interior.

Famed American automotive designer, racing driver and entrepreneur Carroll Shelby partnered with Ford to build Mustang-based performance cars. The result of their collaboration was the Shelby GT350 in 1965. By 1968, the car had evolved to the GT500 and would see the first convertible built in the series. This ’68 Shelby GT500 is also the more limited KR, which stood for “King of the Road”, including a decked out 428 cubic inch Cobra Jet V8.
