The Ruffian Mustang was built as a race car that could drive to work on Fridays. This Custom 1970 Ford Mustang pays homage to the glory days of SCCA Trans-Am Championship. Which at that time, Ford was competing with its legendary 302 Trans Am model. However, this Mustang is a little bit different, or we can say a lot different. It is built as a hardcore racer. And first thing you will notice, it has insanely cool custom widebody with custom build body details.  . Phil Bonner had a relatively short career in the world of top level drag racing but his impact is still felt today and fans of the blue oval brand still herald Bonner as one of the best that ever strapped himself into a full bodied car. His career began like many did down south in the 1950s by hitting strips in the car he drove around every day. Beating on that old Ford with its automatic transmission on strips paved with dirt and clay helped set the stage for a meteoric rise through the straight line ranks that began in the early 1960s and ended at the close of the decade with a chosen retirement. There was certainly a lot of stuff that happened in the middle, though. Bonner was front and center through the rapid and often scary evolution of the funny car from the era of over powered and under chassied door slammers to the “advanced” tube chassis, flip top cars that were part of the program during the late 1960s. He ran Ford cars from the beginning right up until he chose to retire from the sport in 1969 when he saw the writing on the wall for Ford’s factory supported drag program and went back to the world of selling cars. . Sorry but this offer excludes all foreign shipments as well as HI, P.R. & AK     The Shelby American G.T. 350R was created with a singular purpose in mind: transform the image of the Ford Mustang from "sporty car" into "proven race winner." Gene Hamon Ford raced cars, too, relying upon the services of talented regional drivers to produce satisfactory finishes. At an SCCA Regional at Green Valley Raceway in Smithfield, Texas, Bill Steele was tasked with driving 5R108, as he'd previously delivered wins behind the wheel of a Shelby Cobra and a Shelby G.T. 350. For whatever reason, 5R108 intimidated the experienced racer, who begged off driving the car, leaving Gene Hamon with few good options. Sports car star Pedro Rodriguez was on hand, so when Hamon asked if he could handle the Shelby, his reply in broken English was reportedly, "Si, I win." And win he did, beating a Shelby American factory G.T. 350R driven by Jerry Titus, and even besting a 289 Cobra driven by Al Goldman. Perhaps it was this commanding performance, or the success of the G.T. 350R models overall that prompted Mexico City racer Freddy van Buren to cut a deal with Gene Hamon Ford for 5R108. Whatever the reason, the Shelby was shipped south of the border, where its blue stripes were replaced with the red and green stripes symbolic of the Mexican flag. . It’s not easy to see how Carroll Shelby saw dollar signs between the stubby cacti nestled among the yellow rocks. Summer arrives earlier in West Texas than anywhere else in the U.S. The only answer has to be the simplest one: Shelby loved it here, out in the wild, far from anyone that could tell him what to do, or watch as he did exactly what he wanted.  The group slapped the rabbit logo onto a Mustang-based Shelby GT350-R in 1965 before a race near Dallas. It was a harbinger of things to come and it marked the beginning of the half-serious, half tongue-in-cheek Terlingua Racing Team. For old school Terlingua Racing Team fans, Shelby Automobiles and Bill Neale introduced the 1967 Terlingua continuation model Mustang that is revamped with modern technology. On the exterior the car looks like the vintage 1967 Trans-Am race car driven by Jerry Titus and Ken Miles. . Note: Your Credit Card will not be charged until the item is ready to ship! .
