| In 1970, Ford decided to make a
"horse of a different color" out of its Mustang, introducing an option showcasing the new "Grabber" colors - Grabber Blue, Grabber Green, Grabber Orange and Grabber Yellow. The vibrant new colors were not the only exclusives to the Grabber Mustang. It also featured a sports roof and two distinct striping packages. Additional eye-candy included blackout trim paint and dog dish hub caps, trim rings and whitewall tires. More than 5,000 of these special Mustangs were "grabbed" up by eager Ford Fans. |

| For 1970, the Ford Mustang Mach I underwent several changes. New front-end styling was the most notable, including simulated air intakes that replaced the 69's outboard headlights and a change in hood color from matte black to a black or white stripe. The 1970 Mach I still sported the fake hood scoop, though, complemented by new twist-in hood pins. At the rear, the taillights were recessed in a flat panel with honeycomb trim between them. Also notable was the deletion of the fake scoops on the upper quarter panels as well as the addition of ribbed aluminum rocker panels. The standard 1970 Mach I engine was the 351-cid V8 capable of 250 horsepower. The 428 Cobra Jet engine with 335 horsepower and 440 foot-pounds of torque with "shaker" hood scoop was available as an option. | |

| Twister Specials were a group of 96 specially
ordered and consecutively numbered Ford Mustang Mach 1's, were a promotional car made
exclusively for the Ford Kansas City Sales District dealers. The original Twister Special order was placed for 100 Mach 1's, light on convenience and luxury, heavy on performance options. Goodies included 428 SCJ engines, drag pack, competition suspension, power front disk brakes, shaker hood scoop and Goodyear F70x14 Raised White Letter Polyglass tires. The only non-performance options were an AM Radio and Tinted Glass. Half the order was to have been equipped with C6 automatic transmissions and 3.91 traction-lok differentials. The remainder with four-speed manual transmissions and 4.30 traction-loks. Upon receipt of the order in Dearborn there were not enough 428 SCJ engines on hand. The 48 available 428 SCJ's were used and the remaining 48 cars were equipped with the newly announced 351 Cleveland 4V engines. Except for the power train combinations, all of the Twister Mustangs were produced in Grabber Orange and equipped identically. |

| The 1970 Sidewinder Special is one
of the remaining mysteries of the Ford Mustang history. The Sidewinders were all Dearborn
built in the 152,000 to 156,000 serial number range and were sent to the Omaha, Nebraska
district sales office. The cars seem to have been sold at Ford dealers in Iowa and
Nebraska. Research from the Ford Motor Company files identify a real Sidewinder as all having the 351/4V engine, all are Sportsroofs and built in Dearborn, Michigan. From original pictures and Ford people interviewed, it is likely that the Sidewinder Special was a Ford sales promotion, not a dealer-only offering. Original owners speak of the stripe kit box (with a Ford part number) shipped with their car and packed in the trunk. Dealer body men also confirm mounting Sidewinder stripe kits on final delivery to customers. Around 40 Sidewinder Specials are known to have exisited, with possibly more made but fully undocumented yet. |
